Elements of a Quality Assurance Plan for ID0020001 in Salmon, Idaho

 

 

 

In this lagoon, we need to measure oxygen, pH, and temperature from bottom to top of lagoon, and at the influent and the effluent.  Then find the minimum oxygen concentration gradient that gives the best effluent with the least aeration.  An instrument with a pH probe, temperature probe, and oxygen probe is needed, with a long cable for the probe.  The instrument downloads the data to a computer.

An oxygen meter can test the BOD, which makes the BOD test easier.  A turbidity meter can test the TSS, simply by putting the probe in the solution. A microscope can test the effluent for the filamentous bacteria, sulfur bacteria, and algae, which are typical causes of violations.

Cold water will dissolve more oxygen than warm water: 14.6 mg/l at 0 degrees C and 9.2 mg/l at 20 degrees C. Monitoring the temperature in the lagoon can guide the operation of the lagoon.

Algae add oxygen during the day and take up oxygen at night. The oxygen gradient can tell when an adjustment in aerators is needed.  We may need to run the aerators only at night in the summer, because algae supply the oxygen during the day.

From 1988 to 2009, the variability of the lagoon data did decrease, maybe because the dairy closed.  Apparently no measurement of the physical and chemical parameters of the lagoon and no adjustments were made to the operation of the lagoon in these 21 years.  If the pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, etc. are monitored in the influent, in the lagoon, and in the effluent, and adjustments are made to the lagoon operation, when needed, the EPA violations will stop.
