Why an Ethanol Outlet (Calvin Leman)

Transportation fuel for centuries has been a government or a corporate monopoly, from wood to electricity to ethanol to gasoline.  I suppose that is why our idea is so difficult to comprehend. 

People can make their own fuel. 

We need neither a monopoly nor an abstruse method.  Energy independence, like the Declaration of Independence, has to do with democracy.  This is the philosophy for me behind our idea.

The science behind our idea is clear.  Chris Somerville and Nathan Lewis explain it best.  It wasn’t until after I understood the science that the idea became clear for me.  Eventually, lignin and cellulose will be feed stock that bacteria or yeast convert to a molecule like gasoline, without the contaminants.  The temporary solution now is ethanol from starch or sugar.  This process is as close to balancing the carbon dioxide as we know at the moment.

 The economic part of our idea is in an excel file that is on this website.  Within the approximations that we can make from the disparate data from government and industry, the cost of production of ethanol from sugar beets is close to corn, something less than $2.00 a gallon.  Take away the cost of transportation of feed-stock and of ethanol and that is near the price for fuel at the point of sale.  For the 8000 people in this isolated valley, the $10.5 million that goes to oil companies now could go to the people in Salmon and not to Saudi Arabia.  Another $30 million will come from the trickle-down idea, according the economists.

Here is where we need help:

We need help establishing a blender pump outlet in Salmon.  This outlet is to establish a market, educate the people, and to promote energy independence and democracy.  Salmon may be the model that other towns can follow. 

We need help establishing the ethanol production. Our idea is to do it here in Salmon, starting with 1 mgy.  Then increasing to the 3 mgy we use in gasoline each year.  Eventually, people will see that gasoline has no function in a properly designed engine.

Recently we found that Renova Energy and others are stuck with a 100 million gallon per year (mgy) ethanol plant near here that never started. Why they thought importing corn made sense is nonsense to me.  Take away the sugar lobby and you find the ethanol plant is in the middle of sugar beet production.  Imagine sucrose solution stored as corn is stored, to feed the fermentation at the rate for the distillation.  Imagine the beet pulp going to where the corn was to go, after the ethanol is extracted.
